In January 2016, the river Esmeraldas burst its banks, destroying many homes in Chura and badly damaging the foundations of the only medical centre in the area. This left the entire community of more than 5,000 people without access to medical facilities. This community suffers from a very high maternal death rate, and with a 50% child mortality rate for under 5 year olds, the medical centre is critical to the survival of the community.
We started work almost immediately after a local benefactor came forward and offered some of his land for a new centre further away from the river to avoid the risk of repeated flooding. The government of Ecuador has also supported us, providing some labour and building materials.
By March 2018, the new medical centre was almost complete with only a little last-minute paintwork to finish.
A few weeks later, the Chura Medical Centre was officially opened with an inauguration ceremony led by Edison Molina, the President of the community.
He explained that in his almost 10 years as a Mayor he never had the support of the government because he belonged to another political party and thanks to Camps International, they were able to fulfil the goal of having health services within the village.
The Health Centre has already amassed 3,000 medical records and foresees an outreach of up to 10,000 patients including residents of other nearby communities. He stressed that without the help of Camps International this wouldn’t have been possible. He said that for them having the support of volunteers from a country as important as the United Kingdom is source of pride for the community.
Our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this project, especially the Camps International worldwide volunteers that worked so hard, digging, building, plastering, painting and constructing furniture for this essential community facility.
